Academy of Sports Therapy & Bodywork is a private college established by Jill Wigmore-Welsh MSc HPC Consultant Physiotherapist.
Jill trains very small groups of Physiotherapists and others to be capable of practical hands on tissue techniques in bodywork massage and soft tissue manipulation.
FOUNDATION SKILLS and BRIDGE TO PRACTICE are courses for Physiotherapy graduates and undergraduates.
You will train with other Physios and be trained by a Physio
These are high quality courses. Group size is deliberately kept to a maximum of 6, and can be as low as 4.
You work on each other, which leads to a a maximum of 3 students on the course working at a time.
That is a maximum ratio when working of 1 experienced trainer to 3.
If you are interested in learning how to work hands on ask yourself this question……
Do I want to able to DO hands on bodywork, or have a certificate on the wall demonstrating that I understand the concept ?
Think about universities. Many traditional practical professions are now degrees.
Universities often train high quality theoretians, who can devise complex research projects, and write excellent thesis.
BUT DOING PRACTICAL WORK REQUIRES A DIFFERENT SKILL
We believe that learning a practical skill is very different from learning a theory, concept or cognitive academic learning which you can study in a book and therefore needs to be trained in a different fashion.
To give examples, most people can describe how to decorate a house, but the actuality of decorating a house is filled with problems which need to be overcome. This is why most skilled painters and decorators have completed years of practical apprenticeships. The same applied to catering, plastering, mechanical engineering and sport.
What would you rather have ?
A car mechanic who can explain whats wrong with your car, or someone who can explain what wrong and FIX IT !
Many people starting a new sport can understand the concept of the perfect golf swing, tennis serve, or somersault but performing high skill activities takes time committment and dedication.
Thats why there are many sports people but few Olympians
The same applies to the performance of high quality bodywork techniques.
If you want to work with high level elite athletes, then give them respect and dedicate time to achieve a high level of skill
